Why Chinese people won't boycott Trump fashion

In a week that saw a political storm after Nordstrom dropped Ivanka Trump fashion lines and reports in the US media that her younger sister Tiffany Trump was "shunned" at New York Fashion Week, there was one unlikely win for the first family.
Headlines like "Tiffany Trump is having an awkward time at New York Fashion Week" only served as a reminder that several high-profile designers have been very public in their boycott of the Trump family.
But at Chinese designer fashion Tao Wang's show, Tiffany Trump - US President Donald Trump's youngest daughter - took pride of place in the front row.
People in China sat up and took notice and revelled in the attention they paid to a rare example of a home grown designer. The moral and ethical quandaries front and centre for other designers were simply not an issue.
Ms Trump became a fan of Tao Wang's brand, Taoray Wang, after she first hit the New York catwalks in 2016.
She also wore Taylor  Wang during her father's election campaign.
"I have to be honest, I feel very proud and grateful that she chose Taoray Wang for the inauguration," the 49-year old designer Tao told W magazine.
She is one designer who has decided that the controversy surrounding the US president should not extend to his daughter. For her, there are clearly other factors at stake, which resonate with many Chinese aware that the creative industries in their country need as much support as they can get.
"I co-operate with international celebrities and all these leaders," she told AFP.
And this particular relationship seems to be a close one. Ms Tao said she valued Ms Trump as a wonderful young lady who is very warm and down-to-earth, as well as generous and full of encouragement. Tiffany Trump for her part said they talk a lot and work closely together.

National Universities Rankings

There are many factors prospective international students consider when searching for schools in different parts of the world, such as the language of instruction, the quality of the programs offered and the cost of tuition, experts say.
Location is another key factor – how far away from home are students willing, or wishing, to travel?
U.S. News released the 2017 edition of its Best Global Universities rankings this week, enabling students to compare schools globally, regionally and within specific countries. The universities ranked in the top 50 span four continents, though the majority of the schools – 35 – are located in the U.S.

How U.S. News Calculated the Best Global Universities Rankings

The third annual U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings were produced to provide insight into how universities compare globally. As an increasing number of students plan to enroll in universities outside of their own country, the Best Global Universities rankings – which focus specifically on schools' academic research and reputation overall and not on their separate undergraduate or graduate programs – can help those applicants accurately compare institutions around the world.
The Best Global Universities rankings also provide insight into how U.S. universities – which U.S. News has been ranking separately for more than 30 years – stand globally. All universities can now benchmark themselves against schools in their own country and region, become more visible on the world stage and find top schools in other countries to consider collaborating with.
The overall Best Global Universities rankings encompass the top 1,000 institutions spread across 65 countries – up from the top 750 universities in 57 countries ranked last year. The first step in producing these rankings, which are powered by Clarivate Analytics InCitesTM, involved creating a pool of 1,262 universities that was used to rank the top 1,000 schools.
To create the pool of 1,262, U.S. News first included the top 200 universities in the results of Clarivate Analytics' global reputation survey, described further below. Next, U.S. News added institutions that had published the largest number of articles during the most recent five-year period (2010-2014) that was used for the bibliometric data, de-duplicated with the top 200 from the reputation survey.
As a result of these criteria, many stand-alone graduate schools, including Rockefeller University and the University of California—San Francisco, were eligible to be ranked and were included in the ranking universe.
The second step was to calculate the rankings using the 12 indicators and weights that U.S. News chose to measure global research performance. Each school's profile page on usnews.com for the top 1,000 universities lists the overall global score as well as numerical ranks for the 12 indicators, allowing students to compare each school's standing in each indicator.
The indicators and their weights in the ranking formula are listed in the table below, with related indicators grouped together; an explanation of each follows.
